The Jackson Photographic Society (JPS) was organized and held its first
meeting in April, 1945.
The Society is a member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA)
and the Gulf States Camera Club Council.
Beginning with only a small number of members, the Society has now
grown to an organization of approximately thirty members.
Beginning in 1949, and for four years thereafter, the Society
sponsored an invitational salon with a display on the mezzanine floor
of the Edwards hotel. In 1957 the exhibition was revived and with PSA
approval became the Jackson International Salon of Photography. The
Salon continued through 1993 and was one of the outstanding functions
of the Society.
For many years the Society published a monthly newsletter for its
members. Originally called The
Photo-Blab, the title was changed to The Double Exposure in 1954.
Today, The Double Exposure
is distributed at the second club meeting each month. Always placing
high in the Inter-Club bulletin competition sponsored by PSA, The Double Exposure has
received a number of Creative Awards, Honor Awards, and Honorable
Mention Awards in its category of small clubs.
In 2007, the Photographic Society of America hosted it's first
international photo club website contest. JPS won first place in the small club division.
Some of our own members have presented excellent technical and
travel programs, not only at meetings of JPS, but also at meetings of
other societies and conventions. A number of individuals have been
asked to serve as judges at other international salons. Several members
have had their work published in calendars, books and magazines.
We encourage photographers
of all levels to join our club. Everyone is welcome.
